I spoke with a former colleague over the weekend. He moved on to new challenges and it’s probably a good move for him. Interestingly, he mentioned the “new” folks that he works with and lamented the lack of fellowship and “team”.
Who do you work with?
The jerk who has all the answers.
The nudge who likes to complain.
The pal who holds lifetime membership in a Greek organization.
The soldier who just puts in his time and awaits retirement.
The flash in the pan who will be gone in no time.
You see, it matters a great deal who you work with. A calling can only be supported as much as the community around it can bear.
Maybe it’s time to take an inventory to see if your tribe is big enough to support your ambitions, vision and goals. Or small enough to accept you as you are and build you up.
Who do you work with?

I couldn’t agree more, there are few things that determine your success more than who you hang around with. Excellent post.

Who you hang around is a reflection of you. Remember in the play The Lion King, when Mustafa says “I am surrounded by idiots.” Well, if you are, then distinguish yourself by either not being round them or changing your relationships.

This is an excellent point to bring out – one that I have learned makes more difference than just about anything else… TEAM!
I now work with a group of people who are more like a family than anything else… we quibble at times, we laugh a lot, and we help shoulder the load of another all the time… You see I work with a group of 68 people that believe their job is to help others – to have a heart of service – well almost all of them
.
In the coming days and weeks, a great deal will change in my professional life, but so long as those I have learned to respect more than just about anyone continue to stand by my side, and I theirs, we will continue to be the TEAM all others look to as an example.
I will be posting a good bit on this over the next few weeks as I can. Thank you for reminding all of your readers how valuable those you serve with are.

I am not able to figure out whether I am working with a pal, a nudge, a soldier or a jerk. Actually it always depends on him, what he wants to be at that point of time.
